The 2024 MLB Season: A Mixed Bag for the Baltimore Orioles
2024-11-28
The end of the 2024 MLB season presented a complex scenario for the Baltimore Orioles. After an initial burst of promise in the first half, where they seemed like legitimate World Series contenders, the team faced significant challenges in the second half. Their performance in the postseason was particularly brutal, getting swept by the Kansas City Royals while scoring just one run in two games. However, amidst this setback, there are still numerous reasons for Orioles fans to remain excited.

Thankful for a Star Player

In baseball, every franchise strives to find that one star player around whom to build their roster. It is a challenging task, but the Baltimore Orioles can take solace in the fact that they have one. Shortstop Gunnar Henderson is a true bonafide star. A highly rated prospect, the team had high hopes for him, but his rapid ascent to superstardom has been a delightful surprise. After winning the Rookie of the Year Award in 2023, he finished fourth in the MVP voting in the American League, behind Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees, Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals, and Juan Soto of the Yankees. A ROY, an All-Star, an MVP candidate, and a Silver Slugger, Henderson embodies the complete package and is the kind of player that general managers dream of acquiring. His presence gives the Orioles a solid foundation and a reason for fans to believe in the team's future.

Defense in the Cavernous Left Field

The Baltimore Orioles have designed their team with the dimensions of their home field in mind. Defensively, range is crucial when covering the vast left field, and rookie Colton Cowser has excelled in this regard. He has covered the area with precision and has become a reliable option. Cedric Mullins also remains a solid choice in the center field, bringing a great glove to the team. While defense will always be important, fans can be grateful for the efforts made to enhance the field. Parts of the left field will be brought in by 9-20 feet, with the wall being lowered from 13 feet tall to 8 feet and 6’11” in other spots. This modification will allow the team to score a few more runs throughout the season, providing an added boost to their offensive capabilities.

Young Talent and a Bright Future

The Baltimore Orioles are blessed with a wealth of young, high-upside talent. Gunnar Henderson won't turn 24 until next June, while Jackson Holliday is only 20. Colton Cowser is 24, and Heston Kjerstad is 25. The only projected starter currently on the roster whose age will start with a “3” in 2025 is Cedric Mullins. If managed correctly, this young talent will make the Orioles perennial contenders for the next decade. By stockpiling so much young talent over the last few years, the team has laid the foundation for a successful future. Fans can look forward to seeing these young players develop and make significant contributions to the team in the years to come.
