Adam Harcombe's life took a harrowing turn in 2020 when he was brutally attacked while walking a friend home from a nightclub in Porth. The incident left him with severe injuries, including a severe head injury and the loss of vision in his left eye. He was left for dead on the roadside and spent 16 weeks in a coma and hospital.

Overcoming Adversity with Determination and Hope

Recovery Challenges and Determination

After waking from the coma, Adam faced the daunting task of tackling physical and mental challenges. He had to relearn basic skills like brushing his teeth and cutting up food. But his determination was unwavering. Despite the impairment on his left side, he threw himself into training and returned to rugby as a coach.Even while volunteering as a "patient befriender" on the neurosurgery ward where he was once a patient, he continued to apply for jobs but faced setbacks. However, his spirit remained strong.

Joining Vision Products and Securing a Traineeship

In April, Adam discovered Vision Products, a supported business within Rhondda Cynon Taf Council. This organization is dedicated to providing support, training, and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Adam joined the PVCu window team and secured a traineeship, where he is learning new skills like welding windows. He shared, "Since working with Vision, I’ve mentally been in a better place. It’s been a long time coming. Because we’re physically impaired, people don’t understand what day to day life is for us. But here, I’ve learned to use my left hand again. It’s brilliant and I look forward to coming to work."

Sports and Achievements

Outside of work, Adam has been making waves in the world of sport. He now competes as a disabled athlete in F37 shotput and won the event at his second Welsh Para Championships in June. He has also returned to playing rugby, starting with walking rugby.Adam's story is one of immense resilience. He has become a local legend and inspiration for others with his positive mindset. He recently launched his own motivational hoodies with the message 'you got this' on the sleeve.Adam believes that there is no limit to what he can achieve. He said, "I don’t see why I couldn’t climb the ladder. The stuff they do at Vision Products is life-changing for people with disabilities. There’s lots of people out there, like myself, who have been overlooked and this is a chance at a good life for someone like me, or a way back into a job."
