2025-03-14

Since its inception in 1942, the Aiken Training Track has been a breeding ground for equestrian champions, boasting an impressive record of producing 40 national champions, six Kentucky Derby winners, three Preakness Stakes victors, and nine Belmont Stakes champions. The annual Aiken Triple Crown event series, held over three consecutive weekends in March, offers spectators a unique opportunity to witness young racehorses competing for the first time in live events. This prestigious series includes the Aiken Trials, the Spring Steeplechase, and the Pacers & Polo match.

The Aiken Trials mark the beginning of this thrilling event series, featuring six races and family-friendly entertainment. Meanwhile, the Spring Steeplechase showcases high-stakes steeplechase races with challenging obstacles, complemented by a vibrant village of shops and live music. Finally, the Pacers & Polo event ushers in the polo season with an exhilarating match at the historic Whitney Polo Field.

The Excitement Begins: Aiken Trials

This year, the Aiken Trials kicks off the Triple Crown series with a day filled with thrilling races and lively festivities. For eight decades, this event has provided young racehorses their initial taste of competition. With gates opening at 10 a.m., pre-race celebrations starting at 11:30 a.m., and the first race commencing at noon, attendees can enjoy tailgating, local vendors, and family-oriented entertainment throughout the day.

The Aiken Trials serve as a proving ground for budding racehorses, giving them their debut in live competition. Six races will take place, providing ample opportunities for spectators to spot potential future champions. General admission tickets and parking passes are available for purchase both in advance and at the gate. Everyone aged six and above requires a valid ticket, priced at $25, while every vehicle must possess a parking pass, also costing $25. Tickets can be bought from various locations, including the Aiken Training Track Office, Odell Weeks Activity Center, Aiken Saddlery, Aiken Visitor Center & Train Museum, and Local Threads Aiken.

Prestige and Tradition: Spring Steeplechase and Pacers & Polo

The second leg of the Aiken Triple Crown, the Spring Steeplechase, takes place on March 22. This event features five high-stakes steeplechase races where thoroughbreds leap over demanding obstacles. Attendees are encouraged to embrace race-day fashion, particularly with ladies donning elaborate hats. Spectators must purchase electronic tickets for general parking, patron access, and tent areas online via www.showpass.com/aiken-spring-steeplechase-3/ before arrival.

The Triple Crown concludes with the Pacers & Polo event on March 29 at the historic Whitney Polo Field. As the inaugural official polo game of the season, it is hosted by the Aiken Polo Club in collaboration with USC Aiken and The Pacer Club. The event includes an opening ceremony, six fast-paced chukkers, a 20-minute intermission, and an awards presentation. Limited tickets are available, ranging from field-side parking at $125 to VIP pavilion access with catered food and an open bar at $100 per person. General admission tickets cost $10 and can be obtained by contacting Susie Kneece at 803-295-8971 or skneece@gmail.com.
