2025-01-17

In a significant move for the Crimson Tide's defensive lineup, head coach Kalen DeBoer has appointed Jason Jones as the new assistant defensive backs coach. This decision comes after the departure of Colin Hitschler from the coaching staff following just one season. Jones, a native of Tuscaloosa and former Alabama defensive back, brings a wealth of experience and familiarity with the university to his new role. Having previously coached at North Carolina and several other institutions, Jones is set to make an impactful contribution to the Crimson Tide’s defense.

Returning Home: Jason Jones Joins Alabama’s Coaching Ranks

In the heart of autumn, the University of Alabama football team welcomed a familiar face to its coaching staff. Jason Jones, who hails from Tuscaloosa and played as a defensive back for the Crimson Tide, has returned to his alma mater as the new assistant defensive backs coach. This appointment follows the recent restructuring of the coaching team under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Jones expressed deep sentiment about returning to the place that holds special meaning for him. "Tuscaloosa is a unique and cherished location for me," he said. "My family and many friends are here, and the University of Alabama has always held a special place in my heart. It's where I began my coaching journey, and now I have the opportunity to come back and contribute."

Jones’ coaching career started as a graduate assistant at Alabama under Mike Shula in 2003-04. He then moved on to various roles at Tulsa, Rice, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, FAU, Indiana, and most recently, North Carolina. During his tenure at North Carolina, the Tar Heels' defensive backs recorded nine interceptions and 37 pass deflections in the 2024 season.

DeBoer praised Jones' addition to the staff, highlighting his proven track record in developing defensive backs. "Coach Jones will undoubtedly bring significant value to our defensive unit," DeBoer stated. "His knowledge of the university and his history with the program make him an invaluable asset."

The rest of the defensive coaching staff remains unchanged, with Kane Wommack serving as defensive coordinator, Freddie Roach as associate head coach and defensive line coach, Maurice Linguist as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, and Christian Robinson as outside linebackers coach. The Crimson Tide opens its 2025 season on August 30 against Florida State.

From a journalist's perspective, this move underscores the importance of bringing in coaches who not only possess expertise but also have deep-rooted connections to the institution. Jones' return to Alabama could serve as a motivational boost for both players and fans alike, fostering a sense of continuity and tradition within the program. His extensive experience and intimate knowledge of the university position him well to guide the next generation of Crimson Tide athletes.
