Alabama's Quest to Complete Next Season's Basketball Roster
2025-04-22

The transfer portal for college basketball has now closed, leaving Alabama with three scholarship spots to fill for the upcoming season. Although there is no immediate cause for alarm, head coach Nate Oats and his staff must focus on securing additional talent from the names still available. The Crimson Tide experienced significant roster turnover this offseason, losing several key players, but they have already made strides in replenishing their ranks.

This offseason has been marked by notable departures for Alabama. Among those moving on are four starters who exhausted their eligibility: Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Cliff Omoruyi, and Chris Youngblood. Furthermore, transfers like Naas Cunningham, Mo Dioubate, Jarin Stevenson, and Derrion Reid have sought opportunities elsewhere. Labaron Philon, a starting guard, is also likely departing as he enters the NBA Draft. These nine losses account for much of the team’s scoring output and its entire starting lineup from the latter part of the previous season.

Despite these challenges, Alabama has successfully added new talent. Three transfers—Jalil Bethea from Miami, Taylor Bol Bowen from Florida State, and Noah Williamson from Bucknell—have joined the program. Additionally, the Crimson Tide signed a promising trio of freshmen recruits: Amari Allen, Davion Hannah, and London Jemison. This brings the total number of scholarships filled to 10, leaving three openings under the NCAA limit of 13.

As Alabama looks to finalize its roster, numerous options remain viable. While the transfer portal is officially closed, other avenues such as international prospects or junior college players may provide suitable candidates. The coaching staff continues to evaluate potential additions to ensure a competitive lineup next season.

Moving forward, Alabama remains optimistic about its recruiting efforts. By leveraging existing connections and exploring alternative recruitment strategies, Coach Oats aims to assemble a well-rounded team capable of competing at a high level. With three spots yet to be filled, the coming weeks will prove crucial in shaping the future of the Crimson Tide's basketball program.
