Alabama Transfer QB Dylan Lonergan to Visit Georgia This Week
2024-12-15
Alabama transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan is set to take an official visit to Georgia, as per ESPN's Max Olson. Hailing from Snellville, Ga., Lonergan initially chose to sign with the Crimson Tide in the 2023 football recruiting cycle as a former four-star prospect. He was ranked as the No. 13 overall quarterback based on the average of four national recruiting services' rankings. At that time, he opted for Alabama over Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and other schools.

His Performance with Alabama

In the past season with the Crimson Tide, Lonergan completed 5 out of 6 passes for 23 yards and rushed the ball once, covering 16 yards. Last fall, he played in one game, completing 2 out of 2 passes for 12 yards. During his final year in high school, according to MaxPreps, he amassed 3,932 total yards with 39 touchdowns. Throughout his high school career, Lonergan passed for 7,851 yards, completing 63 percent of his pass attempts and scoring 71 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. It was reported that since Alabama was left out of the College Football Playoff, Lonergan intended to transfer away. (ESPN)

Georgia's Appeal

Georgia holds a special allure for Lonergan. Growing up in Snellville, Ga., the state's football culture and the University of Georgia's program have always been in his sight. The opportunity to return home and play in front of his local fans is a significant draw. The Bulldogs' recent success on the field and their strong recruiting class also make Georgia an attractive destination for Lonergan. He sees the potential to contribute to a winning team and continue his football journey in a familiar environment.

Transfer Decision Considerations

When deciding to transfer, Lonergan weighed several factors. The lack of a playoff berth for Alabama was a major consideration. He wanted to be part of a program with a higher chance of competing for championships. Georgia's consistent performance and their ability to develop quarterbacks played a crucial role in his decision. Additionally, the coaching staff's reputation and their offensive system also factored into his thinking. He believes that Georgia can provide him with the platform to showcase his skills and reach his full potential as a quarterback.

Impact on the Team

If Lonergan were to join the Georgia team, he would bring a wealth of experience and talent. His high school statistics show that he is a capable passer and runner. His ability to read defenses and make quick decisions would add depth to the Georgia quarterback room. He could potentially compete for the starting position or serve as a valuable backup, providing stability and leadership. The addition of Lonergan could also have a positive impact on the team's chemistry and overall performance. His presence would inspire the younger players and bring a new energy to the program.
