Andrew Rueb ’95, the Scott Mead ’77 Head Coach for Harvard Men’s Tennis, played a pivotal role in guiding Team USA to victory at the 2024 Master’U BNP Paribas Championship. This weekend, the team showcased exceptional tennis skills and a strong sense of team spirit.
Honoring the Team and the Experience
Recounting his journey, Rueb expressed, "It was an absolute honor to coach these six remarkable student athletes and be a part of Team USA. The level of tennis throughout the weekend was truly astonishing!" Alongside Robin Stephenson (Washington), they led a team of top American collegiate players such as Savannah Broadus (Pepperdine), Sebastian Gorzny (Texas), Amelia Honer (UCSB), Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M), Gavin Young (Michigan), and Michael Zheng (Columbia).The coaching experience was a unique one for Rueb as he commented on the new venture of coaching a co-ed event. "Our players demonstrated incredible courage while facing a lot of pressure. I learned a great deal from their example about the true meaning of being on a team and caring for one another. Billie Jean King's advocacy for more mixed gendered tennis events is spot on. It was amazing to work with these talented young ladies who have bright futures ahead."Team USA started strong by going 3-0 at the championships. They opened the weekend with a convincing 6-1 defeat of Germany. The following day, they defeated the host country of France and advanced to the gold medal match with another impressive 5-1 result. To close the tournament and claim their fifth straight gold medal, Team USA defeated Great Britain for the fourth consecutive time with a 4-1 decision.On his fellow Team USA coach, Rueb had this to say, "A special shoutout to my co-coach, Robin Stephenson, from the University of Washington. In the quarterfinals, Team USA emerged victorious with a score of 6-1. Savannah Broadus (USA) defeated Gina-Marie Dittmann (GER) in women's singles, winning 6-1, 6-4. Mary Stoiana (USA) also had a dominant performance, defeating Sina Herrmann (GER) 6-0, 6-3. Sebastian Gorzny (USA) won his men's singles match against Calvin Muller (GER) with a score of 6-4, 6-4. However, Benito Sanchez Martinez (GER) managed to defeat Michael Zheng (USA) 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. In doubles, Broadus/Honer (USA) defeated Boehner/Dittmann (GER) 6-1, 6-1, and Gorzny/Young (USA) won against Mujakic/Muller (GER) 6-4, 6-4. The mixed doubles pair of Stoiana/Zheng (USA) also secured a win over Boehner/Mujakic (GER) with a score of 9-7.Semifinals vs France
In the semifinals against France, Team USA continued their winning streak with a score of 5-1. Lucie Nguyen Tan (FRA) defeated Amelia Honer (USA) 6-4, 6-3 in women's singles. Mary Stoiana (USA) showed great resilience by winning against Alice Robbe (FRA) 5-7, 7-6, 10-6. Gavin Young (USA) defeated Joshua Dous Karpenschif (FRA) 7-6, 6-2 in men's singles, and Michael Zheng (USA) won against William Jucha (FRA) 7-6, 7-5. In doubles, Broadus/Honer (USA) defeated Mattel/Nguyen Tan (FRA) 8-5, and Gorzny/Young (USA) won against Dous Karpenschif/Raquin (FRA) 7-6, 6-2. In the final against Great Britain, Team USA secured the gold medal with a score of 4-1. Amelia Rajecki (GBR) defeated Amelia Honer (USA) 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 in women's singles. Savannah Broadus (USA) then won against Eliz Maloney (GBR) 6-3, 7-6. Sebastian Gorzny (USA) defeated Finn Bass (GBR) 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 in men's singles, and Michael Zheng (USA) won against James Story (GBR) 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. In doubles, Gorzny/Young (USA) defeated Bass/Story (GBR) 7-5, 6-2.
