Arizona Diamondbacks' Cory Hahn Honored as Trailblazer
2024-12-15
Arizona Diamondbacks executive Cory Hahn has achieved remarkable feats that have earned him the prestigious title of Baseball America's Trailblazer of the Year. His unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on those around him has been truly inspiring. Hahn, who has spent 10 years under the club's baseball operations umbrella, faced a life-altering event in 2011 when his baseball career was abruptly ended. Sliding headfirst into a base during his freshman year at Arizona State University, he critically injured his C-5 spinal cord and was paralyzed from the chest down.

Baseball Career and Injury

The 33-year-old, who recently celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, had a promising baseball career cut short. His skills as an outfielder and a southpaw on the mound were evident even in his high school days. At Mater Dei High School, he was a fixture on the team and was part of the 2009 USA Baseball U-18 roster alongside current MLB greats Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. In six games for Team USA, he batted.333 with four RBIs, showing his plate efficiency and power-hitting potential. Even though he batted better than Philadelphia Phillies superstar Harper in plate efficiency (.294), Harper's power hitting was already evident with 12 RBIs and 20 total bases in eight starts. Hahn's injury was a major setback, but it did not deter him from making a difference.

Starting a Non-Profit

In 2018, Hahn and his former ASU teammate and MLB veteran right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams founded a non-profit called "Project 34". This organization exists to support those with spinal cord injuries and has raised more than $600,000 since its inception. The name "Project 34" was inspired by Hahn's Sun Devil jersey number. Hahn is actively using his story to inspire others battling similar physical challenges, showing that one can overcome adversity and still make a significant impact.

Impact and Recognition

Being named Baseball America's Trailblazer of the Year is a great honor for Hahn. He said on X, "It's an incredible honor to be named the 2024 Trailblazer of the Year by Baseball America. I hope my journey helps inspire the narrative of chasing your dreams and understanding we are all capable of dominating — key is don't ever give up on yourself!" The Arizona Diamondbacks also congratulated him on this recognition, highlighting his achievements. Many baseball and sports personalities have sent him heartfelt congratulations, showing the respect and admiration he has earned.
