A remarkable event took place on April 25th at Salida High School, where students organized and presented the Collage Concert. This unique gathering brought together visual and performing artists, raising approximately $2,500 for scholarships. The funds will be allocated to two scholarships: one dedicated to performing arts and another to visual arts. Professional artists Emilia Markovich, Dania Pettus, and Alison Manthey judged the art exhibition. Featuring 58 silent auction items, this year’s show was more intimate, focusing solely on high school art rather than including works from all schools.
In a vibrant setting, the concert unfolded in the heart of spring, bringing forth an impressive array of artistic expressions. At the forefront were student-created artworks, alongside professional pieces, displayed in a silent auction format. This year, the organizers decided to limit the exhibit to high school contributions, resulting in a more personalized experience. Additionally, the event incorporated an industrial arts segment showcasing woodwork. Seventy-eight awards were distributed among the participants.
The musical component featured performances by the Salida High School jazz band, Salida Varsity Singers, and a new small jazz combo. Music director André Wilkins expressed delight in presenting the top-tier performing groups. Among the awardees, sophomore Lily Ericsson captured first place with her acrylic self-portrait infused with poetic words. Another standout, Violet Juba, excelled in both the Altoid diorama and altered book assignments. Her creativity shone through layered flowers in the diorama and a spring-inspired scene in the book project.
From a journalistic perspective, this event not only celebrates young talent but also underscores the importance of nurturing artistic expression in education. It inspires reflection on how fostering creativity can empower students to explore their identities and aspirations, contributing to their holistic development. Such initiatives remind us of the profound impact that art can have on personal growth and community engagement.
