Assessing Boston College Men's Basketball's Season Start (Dec 17, 2024)
2024-12-17
As the 2024 - 25 season progresses, the Boston College men's basketball team has shown both promise and challenges. After 11 games, they stand at 7 - 4, with a narrow win against the Stonehill Skyhawks at Conte Forum. This win snapped a three-game skid and sets the stage for conference play.

Offensive Struggles and Potential

In the first 11 games, nine were against mid-major opponents, and two against power six teams resulted in losses. Against the South Carolina Gamecocks and Wake Forest Demon Deacons, the team scored a total of 117 points while shooting poorly from the field and three-point line. This has led to them ranking 16th in scoring and 17th in assists per game out of 18 teams in the ACC. Despite playing against a relatively easy non-conference schedule ranked 237th hardest, these numbers are not encouraging. However, there is potential offensively as they play more together and gain experience.

Defensive Solidity

Defensively, the Eagles have been strong, holding opponents under 75 points in all but two games. They have also shown solid wing play at times. Currently, three players average above double figures - sophomores Donald Hand Jr. and Elijah Strong, as well as graduate Chad Venning. This forward-focused strength gives them a solid foundation on defense.

Young Wings as the Offensive Focal Point

If the team wants success in conference this season, they must feature their young wings, Hand and Strong, as the core of their offense. Failure to do so could lead to another lost season, especially considering Earl Grant's tenure. These young players have the potential to make a significant impact and drive the team forward.

Looking Ahead

With no games scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17, and Monday, Dec. 16, the team has some time to work on their weaknesses and build on their strengths. As conference play continues, every game will be crucial. The team's performance in these upcoming matches will determine their fate in the ACC.
