Baseball Doubleheader Ends in Split Decision Between University of Chicago and Case Western Reserve
2025-04-12

A thrilling doubleheader between the University of Chicago Maroons and the Case Western Reserve Spartans concluded with each team claiming one victory. On a windy Saturday at J. Kyle Anderson Field, the Spartans triumphed 4–1 in the morning game thanks to stellar pitching and an early lead. However, the Maroons bounced back in the afternoon contest, shutting out the Spartans 5–0 through a combination of strong pitching and timely hitting.

In the first game, Case Western Reserve quickly took control, scoring three runs in the opening inning off UChicago's ace pitcher, Hayden Leiderman. Despite this shaky start, Leiderman composed himself and retired most batters he faced afterward, ultimately finishing with seven innings pitched. Unfortunately, UChicago's offense couldn't capitalize on their opportunities against C. Griffith, who held them scoreless until late in the game. The lone run for the Maroons came from Braden Jirovec’s single in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough as Case Western added another run in the final frame to secure their win.

The second game saw a turnaround for the Maroons, led by junior pitcher Russell Kwinter. He delivered a dominant performance, allowing no runs over seven innings while scattering five hits. His efficiency paved the way for an early lead when Michael Gladden scored Braden Jirovec in the first inning. The Maroons continued to build momentum, adding more runs strategically throughout the game. In the fifth inning, Erik Rindner contributed with a single that brought home Jack Sharp, increasing their advantage. By the eighth inning, UChicago had loaded the bases, leading to Eddie McCarthy drawing a walk and Jack Sharp delivering a crucial two-run single, sealing their 5–0 victory.

This split keeps both teams competitive in the race for postseason play. The University of Chicago now stands at 21–8 overall, maintaining hopes for further success, while Case Western Reserve sits at 19–9. The rivalry continues into Sunday's decisive third game of the series, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
