2025-01-20

As the calendar turns to 2025, the excitement builds for the upcoming baseball season in the San Francisco Bay Area. Schools in this region are set to kick off their campaigns as early as February, marking the beginning of a new era and the pursuit of the coveted NorCal championship. Although the games won’t start until late February, it's already time to explore the preseason rankings and identify the top contenders for the coming year. This preview highlights ten teams that are expected to dominate the Bay Area baseball scene in 2025.

Granada High School, known for its dominant performance in 2024, is poised to continue its winning streak. Despite losing some key players like Parker Warner, the Matadors still boast considerable depth and talent. Their impressive record of one loss and multiple championships last year solidified their status as one of California’s best teams. With many returning players, Granada remains a formidable force to reckon with.

The Cardinals have emerged as a state powerhouse, having clinched their third consecutive North Coast Section D2 title and a CIF NorCal D2 championship. The return of star pitchers Josh Jannicelli and Jack Pezzolo promises even more success on the mound in 2025. Their consistent performances and strategic depth make them a team to watch closely this season.

De La Salle Spartans had an outstanding 2024 season, narrowly missing out on two championships due to tough encounters with Granada. However, their strong roster, including future college stars Alec Blair and Tyler Spangler, ensures they remain competitive. The Spartans’ depth and experience will be crucial in their quest for glory in the new season.

Cardinal Newman Giants, despite falling short in both the North Coast Section and NorCal finals, demonstrated exceptional talent with standout players like Sam Gorsch and Theo Trono leading the charge. With most of these stars returning, the Giants are well-positioned to challenge for top honors once again.

The Warriors experienced a strong start in 2024 but faced challenges later in the season. Nevertheless, their talented junior class played a pivotal role in the team’s recognition. Stanford commit Quinten Marsh and other returning juniors could propel the Warriors back into contention for top spots in 2025.

The Dons enjoyed their best season since 2018-19, led by a senior-heavy roster that included stars like Sully Bailey and Henry Sousa. Although they fell to Granada in the playoffs, their impressive 20-game win streak bodes well for the future. Returning players such as David Gonzales will be instrumental in maintaining their momentum.

Serra Padres saw significant improvement under first-year head coach Mat Keplinger, who guided the team from a modest 16-12 record in 2023 to an impressive 22-7 in 2024. WCAL MVP Jake Downing’s breakout performance highlighted the team’s potential. Even with several seniors graduating, Keplinger’s ability to maximize player potential makes Serra a team to watch.

Mitty Monarchs overcame a slow start in 2024 to claim the WCAL title and reach the Central Coast Section playoffs. While they lost some key players, younger stars like Waylon Walsh are ready to step up. The Monarchs’ unpredictable yet promising 2025 season could see them making waves in the league.

The Wildcats showcased a well-balanced team last year, excelling in both hitting and pitching. A mix of seasoned seniors and emerging juniors/sophomores contributed to their success. With younger players taking on bigger roles, the Wildcats are primed for continued growth and success in 2025.

Redwood Mustangs secured the NCS D3 championship in 2024, thanks to stellar pitching from Sean McGrath, who was named Marin County Pitcher of the Year. Although they will miss senior catcher Cole Chamberlain, the return of McGrath and other stars positions the Mustangs as strong challengers in the Marin County Athletic League.

The anticipation for the 2025 Bay Area baseball season is palpable, with these ten teams setting the stage for an exciting and competitive year. Each squad brings unique strengths and promising prospects, ensuring fans can look forward to thrilling matchups and memorable moments on the diamond.
