Medical device manufacturer BD is significantly enhancing its production capabilities for essential healthcare products. The company has ramped up its manufacturing of syringes, needles, and intravenous (IV) catheters to address the growing demands of the American healthcare system. With an investment exceeding $10 million in the past year, BD has bolstered its workforce by adding over 215 full-time employees to support this expansion. New production lines for needles and syringes have been established at facilities in Connecticut and Nebraska, with one line already operational and more expected to come online soon.
The expanded capacity will lead to a substantial increase in BD's domestic production of injection devices by over 40%, while conventional syringe output will rise by more than 50%. This expansion is anticipated to add hundreds of millions of units annually, catering to hospital procedures, vaccinations, medication preparation, and drug delivery. Furthermore, BD plans to invest over $30 million in 2025 to expand IV line production at a Utah facility, aiming to meet the increasing demand for catheter solutions. Last year’s investment of more than $2 million in IV line improvements has already increased catheter production by over 40 million units annually.
In recent years, BD has faced workforce adjustments, including layoffs in various locations. Despite these challenges, the company has successfully added more than 70 jobs at its Columbus, Nebraska site. The layoffs in Holdrege, Nebraska, were tied to the spinoff of BD’s diabetes care business. Additionally, BD announced the closure of a facility in Ireland over two and a half years, impacting approximately 170 employees. This decision was made after a comprehensive review to optimize resource allocation. Through strategic investments and expansions, BD continues to prioritize meeting critical healthcare needs while adapting to market changes.
The expansion of BD’s manufacturing capabilities underscores the company’s commitment to supporting the U.S. healthcare system. By investing in new technologies and infrastructure, BD not only enhances its production efficiency but also creates job opportunities. These efforts reflect a dedication to innovation and adaptability, ensuring that vital medical supplies remain readily available for patients and healthcare providers across the country. This proactive approach highlights BD’s role as a leader in advancing healthcare solutions and fostering economic growth.
