Board Delays Decision on Girls Flag Football Program Amid Facility Concerns
2025-01-13

In a recent meeting of the Fredonia Board of Education, members decided to postpone a resolution that would have initiated a modified girls flag football program. The proposal, which initially garnered support from the Buffalo Bills and offered grants for schools statewide, faced scrutiny over financial and safety concerns. Sheila Hahn, an advocate for athletic development within the community, raised questions about the current state of playing facilities before advocating for further discussion on the matter.

The board highlighted several key issues surrounding the proposed program. Among these were the costs associated with sustaining the program beyond its initial grant-funded phase and the need for improved playing conditions. Superintendent Dr. Brad Zilliox noted that future expenses, particularly those related to coaching positions, could significantly increase the overall cost. Moreover, the existing facilities, notably the Orange Bowl, are under considerable strain and deemed unsafe by many. Adding another team would only exacerbate these challenges. Members like Steve Johnston expressed concern over the potential risks of additional wear and tear on already compromised grounds.

The board's decision reflects a commitment to ensuring student safety and making informed decisions. While acknowledging the value of providing diverse opportunities for students, members emphasized the necessity of addressing immediate facility concerns first. This pause allows the district to explore alternative solutions and gather more information from architects Young and Wright. Ultimately, the board aims to strike a balance between expanding athletic programs and maintaining safe environments for all participants.
