Bringing Joy and Opportunity: The Admirals' Inclusive Halloween Celebration
2024-10-31
In a world where the traditional joys of Halloween can be elusive for some, the Vacaville Admirals Baseball Club has stepped up to create a safe and inclusive celebration for the local community. By hosting a Trunk or Treat event, the team has not only brought smiles to the faces of children but also highlighted the power of sports to bridge divides and uplift those in need.

Fostering Community Connections and Providing Access to the Game

The Admirals Baseball Club's Trunk or Treat event was more than just a festive gathering; it was a deliberate effort to reach out to underserved neighborhoods and ensure that all children had the opportunity to experience the magic of Halloween. By setting up the event in the Opportunity House parking lot, the team recognized that these children might not have the same access to traditional trick-or-treating experiences as their peers.

Bringing the Community Together

The event was a resounding success, with a dozen families decorating their vehicles to create a vibrant and engaging atmosphere. The team's volunteers, including Lauren Runow, were instrumental in making the event a reality. "We chose this area specifically because we know these kids cannot get out into the community as much," Runow explained. "So that's why it wasn't based on 'how big can we make the event.' We wanted it here."

Fostering a Sense of Belonging

The Trunk or Treat event was more than just a candy-filled celebration; it was an opportunity for the Admirals' players to connect with the community and share their passion for the sport. "We want to do more stuff like this to get more kids involved in baseball," Runow said, "because it is a sport that does take money, but we want to make it to where anyone can play and anyone can come out."

Building Character and Instilling Values

For Dyron Rolling, the president and founder of the Admirals Baseball Club, the event was about more than just baseball. "It's important to get his players in touch with the 'reality of life' and learn to give back to the community," he said. "In a world and community with enough division, he said, it's important for every organization to bridge those divides."

Empowering Youth Through Sports

The Admirals' commitment to their players extends beyond the baseball diamond. Volunteer coach Vincent Menendez emphasized the importance of guiding students through both baseball and life. "It's our place to get away from everything and let everything go and just have a good time," he said, highlighting the transformative power of sports in shaping young lives.

Fostering Camaraderie and Teamwork

The Trunk or Treat event was not just a chance for the community to come together; it was also an opportunity for the Admirals' players to bond with one another. "I think it's very cool that, outside of playing and practice, they let us come bond with our teammates," said 10-year-old shortstop and pitcher Victoria Naranjo. "It's good to have a deeper connection with the people that you're playing with, so you can trust them."The Vacaville Admirals' Trunk or Treat event stands as a shining example of how sports can be a powerful force for good, bringing joy, opportunity, and a sense of community to those who need it most. By leveraging their platform to make a difference, the team has not only created lasting memories but also paved the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.
