The California men's tennis team left an indelible mark at the Dennis Rizza Intercollegiate Classic, held at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates. Over the course of the three-day tournament, the Golden Bears emerged victorious in an astounding 12 out of 13 matches, cementing their status as a force to be reckoned with.Despite a brief rain delay on Saturday, the Bears regrouped and came out swinging on Sunday. Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright both secured impressive singles victories, with Chen defeating Alexander Rozin 6-4, 6-2 and Wright overcoming Santiago Padilla Cote in a hard-fought 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-4 battle. Traveling to Dallas, the California men's tennis team continued their winning ways at the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge, held at SMU's Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex. The Bears captured five out of their six matches, showcasing their versatility and adaptability to different playing surfaces and opponents.In doubles, the dynamic duo of Jonathan Irwanto and Timofey Stepanov defeated UTSA's Danijal Muminovic and Oskar Grzegorzewski 6-4, while the freshman-sophomore pairing of Bernardo Munk Mesa and Ethan Schiffman bested UTSA's Sergei Haug and Santiago Flyckt by the same score.The Bears' singles performances were equally impressive, with Stepanov cruising past Muminovic 6-1, 6-2, Munk Mesa outclassing Flyckt 7-5, 6-3, and Schiffman dominating Haug 6-1, 6-1. The lone loss of the day came when Irwanto fell to Grzegorzewski in a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 battle.Preparing for the ITA West Sectional Championships
The Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge and Dennis Rizza Intercollegiate Classic served as the final tune-ups for the Bears before the highly anticipated ITA West Sectional Championships, scheduled to take place at Pepperdine from Thursday through next Sunday.The Bears will be well-represented in the singles and doubles fields, with Stepanov, 44th-ranked Theo Dean, and 123rd-ranked Alex Chang set to compete in the singles tournament. In doubles, the 13th-ranked Chang and Wright, as well as the 25th-ranked Dean and Overbeck, will take the court.Additionally, Derrick Chen could earn a spot in the singles tournament as an alternate, while the team of Chen and Stepanov may also secure a doubles berth as an alternate. With their impressive performances in the recent tournaments, the California men's tennis team is poised to make a strong statement at the ITA West Sectional Championships, with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the prestigious NCAA individual championships.
