Eight standout football players from Monticello High School were honored for their commitment to pursue collegiate athletics. This celebration highlighted the achievements of these athletes, including Zeke Pour and Michael Zaney, who will continue their journey at Morehead State University. The event underscored not only their individual efforts but also the camaraderie that has driven them to success on and off the field.
Among the celebrated athletes are running back Zeke Pour and wide receiver Michael Zaney, both set to play Division I football. Pour recounted his relentless dedication, emphasizing how he trained tirelessly even when no one was watching. His perseverance culminated in an impressive 1,200-yard rushing performance last season. Meanwhile, Zaney, a late bloomer who began playing football during his junior year, found his niche in the sport by channeling his basketball work ethic into football. Standing tall at 6'5", Zaney demonstrated remarkable potential with eight touchdown receptions.
Their transition into college teammates exemplifies the strong bonds formed through shared aspirations and mutual encouragement. During countless workouts, they pushed each other toward realizing their dreams. For Pour, achieving Division I status was merely a matter of time due to his unwavering commitment. Similarly, Zaney expressed pride in translating his passion into tangible results, highlighting the synergy between their collaborative spirit and personal ambition.
Other notable commitments include Zayden Simpson and Tyberious Woodson joining Roanoke College, defensive end Brayden Rettig heading to UVA-Wise, Trey Early signing with Southern Virginia University, Oziel Jara-Castillo opting for Bridgewater College, and D’hron Jackson choosing Virginia Union. Each athlete brings unique stories of resilience; Rettig, for instance, overcame early challenges as a smaller player before experiencing a growth spurt that propelled him forward.
This talented group belongs to a senior class that achieved remarkable success, winning 15 games over the past two seasons after struggling initially as freshmen. Their collective triumph reflects the importance of teamwork and support within the squad. As defensive back D’hron Jackson aptly noted, none of them could have reached this milestone without the collective effort and unity fostered among teammates. The future looks bright for these young athletes as they embark on new adventures in higher education and competitive sports arenas.
