2025-01-16

The Cleveland State women's tennis team is set to embark on an exciting 2025 spring season, beginning with a series of matches this weekend. The Vikings will host Marshall and Dayton at the Michael Schwartz Center before traveling to Ohio State for their third match. This season promises to be memorable, as the team aims to build on last year's success, which included winning the Horizon League Regular Season championship. Fans can look forward to receiving special giveaways, while players like Oihane Vicario and Tereze Vevere, who have achieved remarkable records, will lead the charge. The upcoming schedule features 22 matches, including 10 home games, providing ample opportunities for the Vikings to showcase their skills.

Preparations for the new season have been underway since the fall, where key players such as Vicario, Heren, and Vevere demonstrated impressive performances in both singles and doubles play. The team returns five experienced letterwinners from last year, along with two freshmen who joined prior to the fall season. Among the returning players are standout athletes like two-time Player of the Year Oihane Vicario and All-League honorees Sima Heren and Tereze Vevere. These seasoned veterans bring valuable experience and leadership to the squad. Additionally, the dynamic duo of Vevere and Franz has been particularly successful in doubles, boasting an impressive 11-2 record during the fall campaign.

As the Vikings prepare to defend their Horizon League title, they enter the season with high expectations. Earlier this month, Cleveland State was voted as the preseason favorite in the Horizon League Poll, earning 47 points and five first-place votes. This marks the second consecutive year that the Vikings have been chosen as the top team in the league. Head Coach Frank Polito, now in his seventh year leading the Vikings, has overseen significant achievements, including five Regular Season titles and four appearances in the Horizon League Championship Match. Polito's leadership has been instrumental in shaping the team into a formidable force in collegiate tennis.

The Vikings' 2025 schedule includes a mix of challenging opponents and opportunities to further develop their talent. Matches against teams like Marshall, Dayton, and Ohio State will test the squad's mettle early on. As the season progresses, fans can anticipate witnessing thrilling competitions and potential milestones for players like Vevere and Vicario, who already hold notable positions in the program's record books. With a strong roster and high hopes, the Cleveland State women's tennis team is poised for another successful year.
