Coach Damien Gary Steps Down from Hazlehurst Football Program
2025-03-18

Former Hazlehurst football coach Damien Gary has announced his departure from the program via a post on his X account. Gary, an alumnus of Hazlehurst, served as head coach for six years and is set to take up a new role as defensive coordinator at Oak Grove in the fall. During his tenure, he amassed a 34-30 regular-season record and achieved a 5-5 playoff record. His announcement reflects gratitude toward the school district and emphasizes the continuation of relationships with former players.

Damien Gary's journey as a head coach began in Mississippi in 2017 when he led Murrah for two seasons before transitioning to Hazlehurst. In his farewell message, he expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to lead the team where he once played high school football. He highlighted achievements such as winning numerous games and sending many athletes to college, affirming that this move signifies a pause rather than a permanent goodbye. The Hazlehurst Indians concluded their 2024 season with a 3-7 record and were eliminated in the first round of the MHSAA 3A state playoffs by Jefferson County.

The roots of Damien Gary’s connection to Hazlehurst run deep, having graduated from the institution himself. His leadership was marked by significant contributions both on and off the field. Over his six-year period, he not only guided young athletes but also fostered an environment conducive to personal growth. As he transitions into his new role at Oak Grove, which recently claimed the 2023 MHSAA Class 7A championship, his legacy remains firmly embedded within Hazlehurst's history.

Throughout his career, Gary maintained a strong emphasis on developing character alongside athletic prowess. This philosophy resonated deeply with those under his guidance, creating lasting bonds between him and his players. Despite challenges faced during his tenure, including the recent playoff loss, Gary consistently inspired perseverance and resilience among his team members.

Hazlehurst now embarks on the quest for its first state championship since 2012 without one of its most dedicated leaders. However, the foundation laid by Gary promises continued success moving forward. His vision and passion will undoubtedly influence future generations of Hazlehurst athletes even as he writes the next chapter of his professional life at Oak Grove.
