Coast-to-Coast Racing Ventures: José D’Angelo's Holiday Week Showcases Top Talent
2024-12-25

José D’Angelo, a leading trainer in the U.S. and Canada by wins this year, is gearing up for an exhilarating holiday week that will see him competing across the country. This week marks significant events at both Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park. On Thursday, D’Angelo will prepare Bentornato, who recently placed second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and won a Grade 2 race, for the $300,000 Malibu (G1) against a field of seven other three-year-olds. Meanwhile, on Saturday, he returns to his home base at Gulfstream Park where Twirling Queen, a turf star owned by Gu Racing, will compete in the $115,000 Abundantia Stakes. Twirling Queen has been nothing short of spectacular, winning five out of six starts since joining D’Angelo’s stable last winter.

Bentornato's Coastal Challenge: A Test of Speed and Skill

On the opening day of Santa Anita Park, all eyes will be on Bentornato as she takes on some of the best three-year-olds in the $300,000 Malibu (G1). This prestigious race will feature a competitive lineup, including the Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan. Bentornato’s recent performance in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, where she secured second place, has set high expectations for her upcoming run. Trainer D’Angelo is confident that Bentornato’s speed and experience will give her a strong edge in this challenging event.

The Malibu Stakes, known for its fast pace and top-tier competition, presents a unique opportunity for Bentornato to showcase her abilities. Since joining D’Angelo’s stable, Bentornato has consistently demonstrated exceptional form, particularly in sprint races. Her versatility and resilience make her a formidable competitor. The stakes are high, but with D’Angelo’s guidance and Bentornato’s proven track record, this race promises to be a thrilling spectacle. Fans and experts alike are eagerly anticipating how Bentornato will perform against seasoned veterans like Mystik Dan.

Twirling Queen's Turf Triumph: Continuing a Winning Streak

At Gulfstream Park, Twirling Queen is set to defend her unbeaten turf record in the $115,000 Abundantia Stakes. Since joining D’Angelo’s stable last winter, Twirling Queen has become a force to be reckoned with, winning five out of six starts. Her transition from Midwest tracks to turf has been seamless, highlighting her adaptability and talent. D’Angelo aims to maintain her impressive streak in this five-furlong race, despite facing stiff competition.

Twirling Queen’s journey began with four consecutive races on main tracks in the Midwest before being transferred to D’Angelo’s care. Upon arrival, it was clear that she possessed remarkable potential. After securing victories in her first two starts on Tapeta at Gulfstream, including the Melody of Colors in March, Twirling Queen ventured further afield. She triumphed in the Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs in May and the Coronation Cup at Saratoga in July. Although she finished ninth in the Raven Run (G2) over the main track at Keeneland, she bounced back with a win at Del Mar in November. With a brief rest following her Del Mar victory, Twirling Queen is now ready to take on the Abundantia Stakes. Despite concerns about her post position, D’Angelo remains optimistic about her chances.
