A Former UW Star Now Opposing His Alma Mater
Early Days at UW
Back in 2001, this hometown point guard attended his first college classes. He was part of a program that needed a refresh and had a coach on his last legs in Bob Bender. Conroy's journey began with a determination to make his mark on the basketball court. He piled up credentials as the school's all-time assist leader and became a teammate for renowned players like Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson.During this time, UW basketball was in a state of transition. The team was looking for a new direction, and Conroy played a crucial role in shaping its future. His skills and leadership on the court were evident, and he quickly became one of the most beloved figures in UW basketball annals.Pro Basketball and Coaching Career
After a decade in the pro basketball world, which took him briefly to the NBA and then to various locations in Europe and smaller American basketball markets like Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, Conroy turned to coaching in 2015. He spent three years as an assistant for Lorenzo Romar until Romar was fired. Subsequently, he spent another seven years with Mike Hopkins until Hopkins was dismissed. This seamless transition from staff to staff showed his adaptability and dedication to the game. With Hopkins out of the picture, Conroy seriously considered becoming the next Husky head basketball coach. He even had a precursory interview, but the athletic administration decided to hire Danny Sprinkle. Despite this setback, Conroy remained committed to the sport and ended up in Los Angeles working for Eric Musselman.Return to Seattle as an Opponent
On Saturday at Alaska Airlines Arena, Conroy will make a return to Seattle as an opponent. He will be a member of Eric Musselman's new USC coaching staff and will be trying to beat his old team. It will be a strange sight to see him sitting on the visitor's bench at the East end of the arena, surrounded by his family and friends. This moment holds a special significance as it marks a new chapter in his career. It will be a festive and perhaps emotional afternoon in Montlake as he faces his former team. For the latest UW football and basketball news, go to si.com/college/washington.
