Carson Kelly, 30 years old, has had an interesting career journey. He was a former second-round draft pick and has played for four different teams in his nine-year career. In 2023, he faced a setback when he fractured his forearm during spring training with the Diamondbacks and was subsequently released in August. However, his career took a turn for the better when he joined the Detroit Tigers.
With the Tigers, Kelly made significant changes on both defense and offense. These changes paid off last season as he hit.240 with a.716 OPS. As Jack Flaherty's personal catcher, he played a crucial role in guiding the veteran right-hander to a 2.95 ERA. His performance was so impressive that the Tigers traded both him and Flaherty at the deadline, with Kelly going to the Rangers and Flaherty to the Dodgers.
Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the importance of adding an experienced catcher. He noted that while Miguel Amaya showed promise at times last year and should be the main catcher, he also needs breaks. Having a backup plan is crucial, and the Cubs believe they have achieved that with the addition of Carson Kelly.
The Cubs laid the groundwork to sign Kelly earlier this week. After executing a four-player trade to acquire All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker from the Astros, they had the roster space to officially add Kelly to their team. This move not only strengthens their catching depth but also gives them more flexibility in their lineup.
Kelly's contract includes a $7.5 million mutual option for 2027, with a $1.5 million buyout. Each year, including 2027, he can earn a $250,000 bonus for starting 81 games and an additional $250,000 for starting 91 games. These incentives provide added motivation for Kelly to perform at his best and contribute to the Cubs' success.
In addition to signing Carson Kelly, the Cubs also acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Angels for cash in late November. Thaiss, 29 years old, has less than 250 games-worth of major-league experience. While he may not have the same level of experience as Kelly, he provides another option in the catching department and adds depth to the Cubs' roster.
