Delaware Park Revamps 2025 Racing Schedule, Moves Prestigious Handicap to September
2025-01-28

The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission has unveiled a revamped racing calendar for the upcoming 2025 season at Delaware Park. Notably, the Grade 3 Delaware Handicap, previously held in July, will now take place in September. The live racing season will kick off on May 14 and continue until October 11, spanning 75 days. Most weeks will feature races on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with select Fridays also hosting events. Additionally, two special Sunday cards will be introduced in September, highlighting stakes races and showcasing local talent. This new schedule aims to enhance the racing experience for both participants and spectators.

In an effort to diversify its offerings, Delaware Park has made significant changes to its 2025 racing calendar. One of the most notable adjustments is the relocation of the Delaware Handicap from its traditional early July slot to late September. The event, which has been reclassified as a Grade 3 race by the American Graded Stakes Committee, will now be held on September 28. This shift not only aligns with the changing dynamics of the racing world but also provides a fresh perspective on this prestigious competition.

The 2025 season at Delaware Park promises a robust lineup of events, starting with the opening day on May 14. The track will operate primarily on a Wednesday-Thursday-Saturday schedule, with ten additional Friday cards sprinkled throughout the season. Noteworthy exceptions include the absence of races on specific dates like May 15, September 17, and September 24. Daily post times are set for 12:45 p.m. EDT, ensuring consistency for fans and participants alike.

September will see the introduction of two special Sunday cards, adding excitement to the racing calendar. On September 14, the Delaware Certified Thoroughbred Program will be highlighted with four $100,000 races dedicated to locally bred or certified horses. These races will cater to various age groups and genders, offering a comprehensive showcase of local talent. The following day, September 28, will feature the relocated Delaware Handicap, now boasting a purse of $400,000 and running at 1 1/8 miles for the second time in its history.

Another highlight of the 2025 season is the inaugural Delaware Derby, scheduled for June 14 alongside the Delaware Oaks. Both races will share a card, providing a double dose of high-stakes action. Supporting features include the Obeah Stakes and the Alapocas Run, adding depth to an already impressive lineup. In total, eighteen stakes races worth nearly $3 million are planned, including the Robert G. Dick Memorial on July 5, further cementing Delaware Park's reputation as a premier racing destination.

The 2025 racing season at Delaware Park is poised to offer an exhilarating mix of tradition and innovation. By moving key events like the Delaware Handicap to September and introducing new races such as the Delaware Derby, the track aims to attract a wider audience and provide thrilling experiences for all involved. The carefully crafted schedule ensures that every week brings something unique, making it a must-watch for racing enthusiasts across the nation.
