The Northwestern State Tennis team made a strong start to the Joy Pyburn Invitational on Friday, with five of the Lady Demons picking up singles match wins. The team's hard work in practice over the past month paid off, as head coach Marcos Morelli noted, "We did a good job today. The work we put in practice the past month was the key to success today."

Spyrou Shines in Straight-Set Victory

Junior Zoi Spyrou led the way for the Lady Demons, dominating her first-round matchup against Aitana Darder of Southeastern Louisiana. Spyrou won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, showcasing her impressive skills and determination on the court.

Farina and Umeda Continue Impressive Fall Campaign

Sophomores Maria Farina and Honoka Umeda also contributed to the Demons' success, continuing their strong performances this fall. Farina battled against Lamar's Megan Do, emerging victorious with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Umeda continued her dominant run, securing a 6-3, 6-4 victory against LSU-Alexandria's Nahia Echaide Gonzalez.

Freshmen Doberlet and Ortega Make Immediate Impact

The Demons' impressive singles performance was not limited to the upperclassmen, as freshmen Pika Doberlet and Valeria Ortega also made their mark. Doberlet won her match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Zoe Moley, 6-4, 6-4, while Ortega defeated Lamar's Martina Alcaino Vergara, 6-4, 6-3.

Garcia Battles in First Match of the Fall

Junior Sofi Garcia played in her first match of the fall season, but unfortunately dropped her match to Southeastern's Leana Gomez, 7-5, 6-1. Despite the loss, Garcia's competitive spirit and determination were on full display.

Doubles Duo Spyrou and Ortega Secure Victory

In the doubles competition, the Demons showcased their versatility. The duo of Spyrou and Ortega teamed up to win their first doubles match against LSU-Alexandria's Gianna Panaggio and Kanupriya Rajawat, 6-4. However, the team of Farina and Umeda fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kseniya Ramanouskaya and Yana Mykytyn, 6-3.The Demons will look to build on their strong start as they return to the court on Saturday for the continuation of the Joy Pyburn Invitational.
