2025-03-14

The Eastern Illinois women's tennis team embarks on their Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) journey this Saturday with a match against Tennessee State in Nashville. Both teams have been projected to compete fiercely within the OVC rankings, with EIU anticipated to place sixth and TSU seventh in the preseason poll. The OVC tournament is set for April 17-19 in St. Louis, where all eight women's tennis teams will vie for supremacy. Among the Panthers, Charleigh Fay has emerged as a standout singles player, earning recognition as the athlete to watch this season. Her recent victory over Minnesota State highlights her potential, contributing to her overall record of three wins this season.

In doubles competition, Aleyla Wooten and Michelle Kostadinova form a formidable duo representing EIU. Recognized as the team to watch in OVC play, they achieved the honor of being named OVC Doubles Team of the Week earlier this spring. Their performance at the No. 1 doubles position showcases their skill, evident in their current 4-7 record. Last week, Wooten paired with Fay at No. 1 doubles, securing one of two crucial victories against Minnesota State, helping the Panthers claim the overall doubles point. Additionally, Luisa Renovales Salazar and Ornello Lomenzo triumphed at No. 2 doubles, further bolstering the team's momentum.

As the Panthers step into conference play, their athletes demonstrate resilience and determination, qualities essential for success in competitive sports. The upcoming matches not only test individual skills but also foster teamwork and strategic thinking. This season serves as an opportunity for growth, both personally and collectively, reflecting the values of dedication and perseverance that define athletic excellence.
