Elite Horses Set to Compete in Prestigious Tokyo Daishoten
2024-12-28

The prestigious Grade 1 Tokyo Daishoten, carrying a prize purse of US$1.07 million, is set to take place on Sunday at Ohi Racecourse in Japan. This international event features an impressive lineup of ten elite horses, each with its own unique background and recent performances. The race begins at 1:40 a.m. EST on Sunday. Although Ohi is part of the secondary NAR circuit, this race has gained international recognition due to its competitive field. It stands as the only Grade 1 race held annually at Ohi.

Prominent Contenders Vying for Glory

Among the contenders, Forever Young emerges as a leading favorite. Trained by Yoshito Yahagi, this horse has demonstrated remarkable consistency, boasting six wins out of eight starts in Japan. Despite not having won a Grade 1 race yet, his performance in the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic showcases his potential. After a strong showing in the Japan Dirt Classic, he aims to secure his first top-tier victory in the Tokyo Daishoten.

Forever Young's journey has been marked by significant milestones. His near-misses in high-profile races like the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic highlight his resilience. In the Kentucky Derby, he narrowly missed the podium, finishing just two noses behind the winners. Following a summer break, he claimed victory in the Japan Dirt Classic before placing third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Now, with renewed vigor, he seeks to claim the top spot in this year’s Tokyo Daishoten.

Reigning Champions Return for Another Bout

Ushba Tesoro and Wilson Tesoro, both trained by Noboru Takagi, return to the Tokyo Daishoten with high hopes. Ushba Tesoro, the reigning champion, has established himself as a formidable competitor, especially after his victories in the Dubai World Cup and last year's Tokyo Daishoten. Wilson Tesoro, meanwhile, aims to break into the top tier, having come close in several Grade 1 races.

Ushba Tesoro's career has seen a series of impressive victories, including his win in the Dubai World Cup and his repeat triumph in the Tokyo Daishoten. Despite a tenth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, his experience and track record make him a strong contender. Wilson Tesoro, who finished second in last year's race, continues to push for his first Grade 1 win. His jockey, Yuga Kawada, brings valuable experience from last year’s victory with Ushba Tesoro, adding another layer of strategy to his campaign. Both horses are poised to deliver thrilling performances in this year's race.
