Elite Turf Horses Compete in Prestigious Frank E. Kilroe Mile
2025-02-25

This Saturday, Santa Anita Park will host the prestigious $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1), featuring an impressive lineup of eight seasoned turf horses. Among them is El Potente, who recently claimed victory in the Grade 3 Thunder Road stakes earlier this month. Trained by Dan Blacker, El Potente has been a consistent performer since joining Blacker's stable in 2022. The competition includes other notable contenders such as Formidable Man and Mi Hermano Ramon, both coming off appearances at the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1). Each horse brings its own strengths to the race, promising an exhilarating contest on the turf.

El Potente has garnered attention with his recent dominant performance in the Thunder Road stakes, where he triumphed by three lengths, earning a field-high 104 Beyer Speed Figure from Daily Racing Form. This win marked El Potente’s first stakes victory and highlighted his exceptional form. Since transferring to trainer Dan Blacker, El Potente has maintained a remarkable record on turf, finishing in the top three in all ten of his starts. Owned by My Way Racing, El Potente will be ridden by Hector Berrios, who was also aboard during the Thunder Road win. His overall record stands at 14 starts with six wins, two seconds, and two thirds, accumulating earnings of $248,796.

Mi Hermano Ramon, trained by Mark Glatt, adds another layer of competition to the race. Despite finishing fourth in the Pegasus World Cup Turf, this 5-year-old gelding boasts an impressive resume. In November, he won the Seabiscuit (G2) at Del Mar and placed second in the San Gabriel (G2) in December at Santa Anita. Owned by Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners and Red Baron’s Barn, Mi Hermano Ramon has earned $402,980 over 11 starts. Top jockey Flavien Prat will be riding him in the upcoming Kilroe Mile.

Formidable Man, under the guidance of Michael McCarthy, brings further intrigue to the race. Though he faded to last place in the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus, this 4-year-old City of Light colt previously secured victories in the Hollywood Derby (G1) and Del Mar Derby (G2), both held at Del Mar. Owned by William K. Warren Jr. and Suzanne Warren, Formidable Man has amassed $637,425 in earnings over 11 starts. He will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli in this crucial event.

The Frank E. Kilroe Mile promises to be a thrilling showcase of elite turf talent. With each horse bringing unique strengths and past successes, the race sets the stage for an unforgettable competition. El Potente, Mi Hermano Ramon, and Formidable Man are just a few of the standout entries that highlight the depth and quality of this year's field. As they line up at the starting gate, all eyes will be on which horse can claim victory in this prestigious event.
