Empowering Parkinson's Patients: Owensboro YMCA Launches Free Boxing Program
2025-02-21

In an innovative initiative to support individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, the Owensboro Family YMCA has introduced a unique non-contact boxing program. This community-focused effort aims to enhance physical well-being and foster a supportive environment for participants. The program is designed to improve balance, coordination, and overall health through movement and strength exercises. Classes will begin on February 26 and continue twice weekly from March 3. Additionally, the YMCA plans to establish a caregiver support group to address key symptoms of Parkinson’s, ensuring comprehensive care for both patients and their families. The initiative has been made possible through community support and a grant from Owensboro Health.

A New Chapter in Parkinson's Support Begins in Owensboro

In the heart of Owensboro, a significant step forward in supporting Parkinson’s patients is unfolding at the Owensboro Family YMCA. Located at 900 Kentucky Parkway, this institution is launching a groundbreaking free non-contact boxing program specifically tailored for individuals affected by Parkinson’s. Scheduled to kick off on February 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the program will transition into regular sessions every Monday and Wednesday starting March 3, during the same time slot.

The program’s primary objective is to empower participants by enhancing their balance, coordination, and overall well-being. Through carefully crafted exercises, participants can expect improvements in mobility and strength. Recognizing the importance of holistic support, the YMCA will also introduce a caregiver support group following initial assessments. These sessions will delve into common challenges faced by Parkinson’s patients, such as limited movements, imbalance, stiffness, and respiratory issues.

The impetus for this initiative stems from a recognized gap in community resources. YMCA CEO Tom Bontrager highlighted the organization’s response to local needs, stating that they identified a lack of dedicated spaces for Parkinson’s patients to connect and support each other. With financial assistance from Owensboro Health and generous donations from senior members, the YMCA was able to secure specialized equipment and certify a fitness instructor to lead the program.

To participate, interested individuals are encouraged to contact Wellness Director Jordan Profitt by February 25 for registration details.

This new program not only offers a platform for physical improvement but also fosters a sense of community and mutual support. It exemplifies how local organizations can play a crucial role in addressing specific health needs within their communities. By providing a safe and encouraging environment, the Owensboro Family YMCA sets a commendable example of proactive healthcare initiatives that prioritize both body and mind.
