FAA Investigates Near Collision at LAX Involving Gonzaga Basketball Team's Flight
2024-12-30

In a recent aviation incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is conducting an investigation into a near-miss event that occurred at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The close encounter involved two aircraft, one of which carried the entire Gonzaga Men’s Basketball team. This alarming situation highlights the critical importance of air traffic control and safety protocols in ensuring passenger safety.

Near-Collision Incident Details

On a crisp Friday afternoon in late December, as winter was setting in, the Gonzaga Men’s Basketball team touched down at LAX after their flight from Spokane. It was around 4:20 p.m. when the charter plane, operated by Key Lime Air, began taxiing toward the terminal with its passengers. However, an unexpected scenario unfolded as they approached another commercial airliner preparing for takeoff.

Air traffic controllers issued an urgent stop command to the Key Lime Air flight as it neared the runway where a Delta Airlines flight bound for Atlanta was set to depart. Despite the instructions, the Key Lime Air plane continued moving forward past the designated holding point, prompting the controller to repeatedly shout “STOP.” Fortunately, the aircraft did not cross the runway edge line, averting a potential disaster.

The incident was captured on video by a local photojournalist, Kevin Ray, who later uploaded the footage to his YouTube channel, providing visual evidence of the tense moments. Key Lime Air, recognizing the gravity of the situation, has pledged full cooperation with the FAA’s investigation and emphasized their commitment to stringent safety standards.

Jon Coleman, Senior Vice President of Key Lime Air, stated that the company prioritizes the safety of all passengers and crew members. He assured the public that they are working diligently within their Safety Management System to uncover the facts and will respond appropriately.

As the FAA delves into this matter, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in the aviation industry.

From a journalist's perspective, this event underscores the critical role of air traffic controllers and the importance of strict adherence to safety procedures. While no harm was done this time, it highlights the potential dangers that can arise from even minor lapses in communication or protocol. It also emphasizes the responsibility of all parties involved in aviation to maintain the highest standards of safety at all times.
