Flag Football Paves the Way for High School Girls in Pennsylvania
2025-03-18

A groundbreaking development has emerged for high school girls in Pennsylvania as flag football is set to become an official sport, thanks to collaborative efforts between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles organizations. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) recently finalized its decision to incorporate the sport into its emerging program, mirroring the path taken by girls wrestling just a couple of years ago. With plans underway at both national and state levels, the aim is to launch girls flag football during the 2025-26 academic year.

Interest in this sport has skyrocketed following the International Olympic Committee's announcement to include flag football in the 2028 Los Angeles Games for both men and women. In Pennsylvania, teams have predominantly formed around the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia regions, home to the NFL franchises. However, other areas like DuBois-Brockway have also embraced the sport, with local talent such as Reese Glass emerging as a prominent figure. Reese has not only competed locally but has also made her mark on the state and national stages through various competitions.

The DuBois Oklahoma Athletic Association (DOAA) continues to foster young athletes' interest in flag football by hosting their eighth annual youth league. This league caters to players aged six through fourteen, currently featuring eighteen junior high girls from DuBois and Brockway participating in the 5 vs. 5 format. Guided by experienced coordinators and coaches, including Reese’s father Ryan Glass, the league benefits from his extensive background in flag football spanning over two decades. His accolades range from national championships to international refereeing, culminating in his induction into multiple halls of fame.

Beyond personal achievements, the Glass family aims to expand opportunities within their community by introducing travel teams for boys and girls. Their vision aligns with the growing recognition of flag football across educational institutions and collegiate programs, anticipating increased support leading up to the 2028 Olympics. As Reese continues refining her skills with her Pittsburgh-based travel team, she exemplifies dedication and passion that inspire others to embrace this burgeoning sport. By promoting inclusivity and physical activity, flag football serves as a testament to what can be achieved when communities unite behind a common goal, fostering growth and empowerment among young athletes nationwide.
