Former 'baseball nut' returns 50-year overdue book to Michigan library
2024-12-14
Once upon a time, in suburban Detroit, a young boy was captivated by the world of baseball. Chuck Hildebrandt, now 63 and living in Chicago, carried with him a treasured book titled "Baseball’s Zaniest Stars" when he visited the public library in Warren during Thanksgiving. Little did he know that this book held a story that would span half a century.
An Unreturned Treasure
In 1974, as a 13-year-old "baseball nut," Hildebrandt borrowed this book but never returned it. "When you're moving with a bunch of books, you're not examining every book. You throw them in a box and go," he explained. Over the years, he lived in many cities, and the book remained forgotten until a chance discovery.Inside the book was a slip of paper indicating that it was due back at the Warren library on 4 December 1974. This discovery sparked a thought in Hildebrandt's mind. He decided to keep the book until 2024, the 50th anniversary, and then make an attempt to return it. He believed that the library might want to publicize this long overdue exchange. The Library's Forgiveness
Recently, Hildebrandt met library director Oksana Urban. She listened to his story with interest. Although he hasn't heard anything since then, Urban told the Detroit Free Press that all is forgiven. "Some people never come back to face the music," she said of patrons with overdue books. "But there was really no music to face because he and the book were erased from our system."The Effort to Give Back
In return for the returned book, Hildebrandt is now on a mission to raise $4,564 for Reading Is Fundamental, a non-profit literacy group. The amount roughly represents a 50-year overdue library fine. Hildebrandt is seeding the effort with $457. This act shows his commitment to giving back and making a positive impact. He hopes that by raising this money, he can help other children discover the joy of reading. "Reading is the key to a better future," he said. "I want to do my part to support this important cause."
