On the first day of the week, Dion Bethea, head coach at Gray Collegiate Academy, revealed that Zam Fredrick II, a former standout basketball player from South Carolina, would join his team as an assistant coach. Although the hiring was initially mentioned in March, it has now been formalized. This development brings together two former University of South Carolina teammates, as Brandon Wallace, another key figure in the Gamecocks' history, serves as the head coach for the girls’ basketball team at Gray. Fans eager to stay updated on all things Gamecocks can take advantage of a special offer available for just $1 for 7 days.
Fredrick's illustrious high school career at Calhoun County saw him become the state’s top scorer over four years. His college journey began at Georgia Tech before transferring to South Carolina, where he spent three years, including one redshirt year. Over two active seasons, he averaged more than 15 points per game while forming a formidable backcourt partnership with Devan Downey under coaches Dave Odom and Darrin Horn. In his final year, Fredrick contributed significantly to the Gamecocks’ success, which included a 21-win season and an NIT appearance.
A defining moment in Fredrick’s collegiate career came during the 2008-2009 season when he scored a last-second game-winning basket against Florida. With mere seconds left, Mike Holmes executed a crucial pass beyond half-court, allowing Fredrick to secure the victory with a layup. Following his collegiate tenure, Fredrick pursued a professional career overseas.
Beyond his own accomplishments, Fredrick carries a legacy through his father, also named Zam Fredrick, who earned All-American honors for the Gamecocks in the early 1980s. The elder Fredrick later achieved remarkable success as a coach, claiming ten state championships at Calhoun County, including three alongside his son.
This new chapter for Zam Fredrick II marks a significant transition from player to mentor, bringing invaluable experience and insight to Gray Collegiate Academy's coaching team. As the academy looks forward to leveraging his expertise, fans anticipate how this move will shape the future of their basketball program.
