Growing up on a sprawling farm with over 160 acres and livestock, Durbin developed a strong work ethic early on. His father worked for Standard Oil while his mother managed the household, instilling values that would later define his coaching philosophy. Despite being surrounded by a non-athletic family, Durbin found solace and camaraderie through sports, bonding particularly with his sister Melinda, who shared his love for athletics.

Sports as a Pathway to Purpose

Durbin’s high school years were marked by his participation in both basketball and football. Though not exceptionally gifted, his passion for these sports fueled his desire to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. He attended Kent State University, majoring in communications, hoping to become a broadcaster. However, during his college years, he realized his true calling lay in coaching.
