From Novice to Champions: The Rise of Victoriam Farm in Horse Racing
2025-02-06

In a remarkable journey from inexperienced enthusiasts to influential figures in the world of horse racing, Kelly Mahoney and Brad Kinsell have transformed their passion into a thriving enterprise. What began as an impulsive decision following the 2022 Kentucky Derby has evolved into Victoriam Farm, a stable with over 36 horses and two stakes winners. This story chronicles their rapid ascent, highlighting key milestones and the support of industry veterans that propelled them forward.

The idea for Victoriam Farm was sparked during the 2022 Kentucky Derby when Mahoney witnessed Rich Strike's historic upset victory. Inspired by this event, he approached his business partner Kinsell with an ambitious goal: to win the Kentucky Derby. Despite initial hesitation, Kinsell eventually agreed, and the duo embarked on a new venture. Their backgrounds in property development and fire protection did little to prepare them for the complexities of horse racing, yet they were determined to succeed.

Mahoney's visit to Ocala solidified his commitment. He purchased a farm there, laying the foundation for Victoriam Farm. With the help of David O’Farrell and Hunter Rankin, they attended the Keeneland November Sale in 2022, acquiring several broodmares. One of these purchases, Stone Silent, quickly became a star, winning multiple stakes races and sweeping a series at Gulfstream Park. Her success not only boosted their confidence but also attracted a devoted following among Mahoney’s employees and associates.

Building on Stone Silent's achievements, the pair acquired Just a Care in 2023. Like her predecessor, Just a Care showed immediate promise, winning her first race for Victoriam. This weekend, she aims to replicate Stone Silent's success in the Ladies' Turf Sprint Stakes. Beyond their current stars, Victoriam Farm is focused on developing its own bloodlines. They have six juveniles in training and are excited about their upcoming class of homebreds, including offspring from prestigious sires like Not This Time and Uncle Mo.

The founders credit their rapid progress to the mentorship of seasoned professionals like O’Farrell and Rankin. These connections have opened doors within the industry, countering initial skepticism about outsiders breaking into horse racing. Both Mahoney and Kinsell emphasize the importance of building a sustainable legacy. Named after the Latin word for victory, Victoriam Farm symbolizes their long-term vision—to breed winning horses and establish reputable bloodlines that future generations can enjoy. As they continue to grow, Mahoney and Kinsell remain committed to nurturing a successful and enduring program in the sport of horse racing.
