FSU Brings in Evan Cooper to Coach Safeties with Coaching Experience
2024-12-07
Mike Norvell continues to strengthen his coaching staff at Florida State by making another hire from Matt Rhule's coaching staff in Nebraska. On Saturday morning, the university announced the addition of Evan Cooper as the next safeties coach. Cooper, a Miami native and American Heritage grad, brings with him over a decade of coaching experience at the FBS and NFL levels. He will reunite with his defensive staff, including defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, and work alongside DB coach Patrick Surtain Sr.

Norvell's Excitement for Cooper's Arrival

"Having Evan Cooper join our Nole Family is a great step forward," Norvell said in the FSU press release. "It's wonderful to have another Dade County native back working in his home state. Our safeties will undoubtedly benefit from his extensive experience and expertise. He will be a valuable collaborator with Tony White, Patrick Surtain, and the rest of our defensive staff as we strive to reestablish the dominant defense that Florida State is renowned for. I am extremely excited about the future here at Florida State."

Cooper's Coaching Experience

Before coming to Nebraska, Cooper served as the Carolina Panthers' cornerbacks coach and player evaluation director from 2020 to 2022. In the 2021 season, the Panthers boasted the second-best total defense in the NFL, allowing an average of 305.9 yards per game. They also ranked fourth in pass defense and had one of the lowest completion rates allowed. Another stop on Cooper's coaching journey was Baylor (2017-2019), where he was part of the coaching staff that participated in the Big Championship and the Sugar Bowl in 2017. During his time there, he coached corners, safeties, and the defensive line. Cooper also served as an assistant director of player personnel in Miami in 2015 and as the director of player personnel at Temple (2015-16). He played all four years for the Owls before becoming a graduate assistant and director of external operations. His coaching career began in 2011 and 2012 when he was a DB coach at Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale.

Cooper's Impact on Florida State's Defense

Nebraska's defense was highly regarded during Cooper's tenure. They allowed only 6.1 yards per pass attempt, ranking ninth lowest in the country and 15th in passing efficiency defense. This season, the Huskers held seven of their 12 opponents to less than 200 passing yards, with two of them under 100. On the ground, Nebraska was ranked eighth in run defense, allowing an average of 92.9 rushing yards. The Huskers also ranked 11th in total defense and 13th in scoring defense. These statistics highlight Cooper's ability to contribute to a strong defensive unit. For Florida State, which has struggled with its defense all year after a 2-10 season, Cooper's arrival is seen as a significant boost. "I'm excited to join the Florida State football program," Cooper said. "Florida State has an elite history among the best programs in college football, and I'm looking forward to working with Coach Norvell and the rest of the staff. I can't wait to get started with our players and contribute to upholding the DBU legacy."
