In December 2024, Georgia Tech women's basketball found itself at the pinnacle of success. The team catapulted to No. 17 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll, marking the best start in program history. This remarkable achievement came after a week of impressive performances, with the Yellow Jackets making the biggest jump in the poll, moving up eight spots.The season has been a series of victories, with Tech moving to 11-0 on the season. Their latest triumph came against No. 14 North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener. The Jackets led by as many as 23 points in the third quarter, showcasing their dominance. North Carolina, known for its strong defense, was held to 82 points, the most allowed by the Tar Heels this season.This win was not the first against a ranked opponent. In November, the Jackets took down then-No. 21 Oregon in the Hawaii North Shore Showcase. To date, Georgia Tech has faced four teams in the top 50 NET rankings and emerged victorious in all four matches.Player Performances
Five Jackets finished in double-figures in the Chapel Hill game, marking the third time this season. Tonie Morgan and Dani Carnegie led the way, contributing 23 and 22 points respectively. Their scoring prowess has been a key factor in the team's success.Carnegie leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game. She is the top-scoring freshman in the ACC and ranks 12th nationally among freshmen. Kara Dunn, who added 13 points against UNC, is second on the team with 13.3 points per game. This season marks the 50th anniversary of women's basketball at Georgia Tech. Under the direction of coach Jim Culpepper, the team competed in the Georgia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (GAIAW) in 1974-75 before joining the ACC in 1979-80. Over the past 50 years, the team has achieved many milestones, including 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, two Sweet 16 appearances (2012, 2021), and nine WNBA draft picks, including first-round draft picks Alex Montgomery and Sasha Goodlett. In 1992, the team captured the National Women's Invitational Tournament, marking its first postseason berth in school history. Currently in its sixth season under head coach Nell Fortner, the Yellow Jackets have reached postseason play three times in the last five years.Full Steam Ahead Initiative
The Full Steam Ahead initiative is a $500 million fundraising effort aimed at helping Georgia Tech athletics compete for championships at the highest level. The initiative will fund transformative projects such as renovations to Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field (the home of Georgia Tech football), the Zelnak Basketball Center (the practice and training facility for Tech basketball), and O'Keefe Gymnasium (the home of Yellow Jackets volleyball). It will also provide additional support to advance Georgia Tech athletics through program-wide operational improvements.
