Located in an alley behind Auto Fixit Body Shop off Newberry Street NW, this artwork honors the legendary Grand Rapids Chicks, a professional all-women baseball team that competed from 1943 to 1954 in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The mural not only celebrates their athletic achievements but also highlights the societal barriers they overcame. As part of a broader initiative called Women’s Way, launched in 2020, this project showcases the contributions of local minority women leaders through art.

A Tribute to Perseverance and Passion

During a golden autumn season, visitors to downtown Grand Rapids are greeted by a striking piece of public art tucked away in an unexpected corner. Created by West Michigan artist Michi Farias, the mural pays homage to the historic Grand Rapids Chicks, whose legacy endures long after their final game. These athletes played in short skirts while men wore protective pants, showcasing resilience both on and off the field. Their journey inspired the iconic film "A League of Their Own," cementing their place in sports history. In her artist statement, Farias emphasizes how these women defied societal norms, serving as trailblazers for future generations.

The mural was unveiled in 2021 following delays due to the pandemic, though its creation began in 2020. Kimberly Van Driel, director of public space management for Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., notes that the mural represents one of the few cities where women's professional baseball thrived during that era. Collaborating with organizations like the Greater Grand Rapids Women’s History Council and Lions & Rabbits Creative Arts & Events Space, the city ensured that this tribute would resonate deeply within the community.
