The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) conducted an extensive multi-year project under its "Adopt a Beach" initiative, which spans Turkey, Tunisia, Italy, and Greece. This endeavor revealed both the most polluted and cleanest beaches in Greece. Among the worst offenders is Erotospilia Beach near Athens, followed by Vagionia Beach on Poros Island and Apollonias Beach on the Athenian Riviera. On the brighter side, Psilou Roumi in Crete, Palio near Kavala, and Stegna Beach on Rhodes emerged as the top three pristine shores.

According to the findings, Erotospilia Beach, nestled close to the bustling Greek capital, recorded over 10,000 fragments of litter during visits up to April 2025. Despite this alarming statistic, it retains a four-star rating on Tripadvisor, with visitors praising its hidden charm and crystal-clear waters. Meanwhile, Vagionia Beach on Poros Island, facing Athens across the Saronic Gulf, ranks second in pollution levels due to limited visitation and proximity to urban areas. The third-ranked beach for pollution, Apollonias, lies within the vibrant Athenian Riviera, known for its upscale resorts and lively atmosphere.

On the flip side, Greece also boasts some of the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean. Leading the pack is Psilou Roumi, located on the southern coast of Crete. Its remote position far from major cities contributes to its immaculate condition, offering tourists warm Libyan Sea waters and untouched sands. For those seeking more accessible options, Palio near Kavala provides a perfect blend of cleanliness and convenience, just a short drive from the airport. Lastly, Stegna Beach on Rhodes delights visitors with its tranquil ambiance, authentic beauty, and picture-perfect scenery.
