2025-01-04

In a thrilling display of speed and strategy, the three-year-old colt Guns Loaded secured a narrow victory in the $165,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The race, held over one mile on a fast main track, saw jockey Luis Sáez guide Guns Loaded to an early lead, which the horse maintained despite a strong challenge from Treaty of Rome. Owned by Morplay Racing, Joey Platts, and Lady Sheila Stable, Guns Loaded completed the race in 1:38.87, marking his second consecutive win. This victory also marked back-to-back wins for Sáez in this prestigious event.

A Closer Look at the Race

On a crisp mid-November day at Gulfstream Park, excitement filled the air as the field lined up for the Mucho Macho Man Stakes. As the gates opened, all eyes were on the favorite, Guns Loaded, who sprang forward from the inside post position. Initially expected to challenge for the lead, Macho Music stumbled out of the gate, leaving Guns Loaded unchallenged at the front. Under the expert guidance of jockey Luis Sáez, Guns Loaded set a controlled pace, with fractions of 24.54 and 47.61 seconds, while being closely tracked by stablemate McKellen.

As they approached the final turn, Treaty of Rome, ridden by Dylan Davis, made a bold move to the outside, aiming to close the gap. However, Guns Loaded showed remarkable resilience, clinging to the lead despite the late charge. The finish was nail-bitingly close, with Guns Loaded crossing the line just a neck ahead of Treaty of Rome. Septarian finished third, followed by Macho Music, Cool Intentions, McKellen, and Sonic Skidaddle.

Trainer José D’Angelo praised both the horse and jockey for their performance. "Everything worked perfectly," he said. "We were concerned about the pace, but Luis managed it beautifully. We've been working on his starts, and today it paid off."

Looking ahead, D’Angelo plans to target the $250,000 Holy Bull (G3) in February, where Guns Loaded will face even tougher competition over 1 1/16 miles.

From a spectator's perspective, this race was a testament to the importance of preparation and strategic racing. Guns Loaded's victory not only showcased his raw talent but also highlighted the meticulous training and planning that go into every successful race. It serves as a reminder that in the world of thoroughbred racing, even the smallest details can make all the difference.
