Gustavus Women’s Tennis Team Dominates Non-Conference Opponents

On March 22, in Saint Peter, Minnesota, the Gustavus women's tennis team showcased their prowess by defeating two non-conference rivals, Nebraska Wesleyan and UW-Superior, both with decisive 7-0 scores. These victories marked the 698th and 699th wins under the leadership of Head Coach Jon Carlson. With these results, the Gusties improved their season record to 12-6.

Dominant Performances Highlighted by Stellar Play

In a brilliant display of skill and teamwork, the Gustavus women’s tennis squad swept Nebraska Wesleyan and UW-Superior in back-to-back matches held on a crisp spring day. The morning encounter against Nebraska Wesleyan began with an impressive doubles performance where Molly Austin and Lanie Davis secured the first point with a commanding 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Madison Packer and Bethany Smith followed suit with another 6-0 triumph at No. 3, while Allison Szalay and Ella De Young added a solid 6-1 victory at No. 2.

The singles competition was equally dominant, as De Young, Packer, and Rika Cross each achieved flawless 6-0, 6-0 victories in their respective slots. Austin and Davis continued their strong form, contributing key wins at the top of the lineup. Later in the afternoon, Gustavus faced UW-Superior with equal intensity. Brooke Haddorff and Pavla Yakimova started the match with a resounding 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, setting the tone for the rest of the contest. Fresh talent like Maya Brakhage and Noor Omar delivered crucial points, ensuring a clean sweep of all matches.

From start to finish, the Gusties demonstrated exceptional depth and versatility, highlighted by standout performances from both veteran players and newcomers alike.

Looking ahead, the Gusties will split their roster next weekend, sending one group to Madison, Wisconsin, for the Midwest Invite and hosting Central College (Iowa) at home.
