Head-to-Head in Demoiselle: Exotic Wagers Wide Open
2024-12-06
In the highly anticipated Demoiselle race, a diverse group of fillies is set to compete. Each one brings its own set of skills and potential, making this a race to watch. Let's take a closer look at the contenders and what they have to offer.

Uncover the Potential in the Demoiselle Field

Muhimma (4-5)

Muhimma enters the race with an impressive track record. In her previous starts, she showed exceptional speed and stamina, leaving her opponents in the dust. Her combined winning margin of 13 lengths against sprinters is a testament to her talent. A daughter of Munnings, she hails from a strong distaff line that gives her the ability to handle longer distances. Despite shipping and trying two turns for the first time, Muhimma is the one to beat. Her last start was a standout performance, where she exploded around the turn and left no doubt about her abilities. With regular jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle, she is sure to give it her all.

Trained by Brad Cox, Muhimma has shown remarkable consistency. In her two starts, she won by a combined thirteen lengths, and the runner-up from her debut race went on to become a next-out winner. Her second outing in a seven-furlong, high-level optional claimer included Pocahontas (G3) runner-up Liam in the Dust, who ran 5 1/2 lengths back in second. Cox's success rate with sprint-to-route runners gives Muhimma an added edge, making her a serious contender in the Demoiselle.

Liam in the Dust (10-1)

Liam in the Dust has had some impressive moments in her racing career. In the Pocahontas (G3), she fought on the lead but was outfinished by the late-charging winner. However, in her last start against Muhimma, she closed strongly and finished in a clear second place, 3 1/2 lengths ahead of the third-place filly. By Liam's Map, she is out of Whisper Louise, an unraced Bernardini mare, and her second-generation female family includes Grade 1 winner Pinehurst.

Race Lens shows that Liam's Map has four winners from 61 starters at 1 1/8 miles, indicating her potential at this distance. In her last race, Liam in the Dust earned an 82 late pace figure, the second-highest in the Demoiselle field. Her closing style could be an advantage with the extra distance, making her a contender worth considering in the exotics.

Fortuna Mia (15-1)

Fortuna Mia has faced some tough competition in her last three starts, all ungraded stakes. Despite having a wide trip each time, she showed some improvement in the one-mile Tempted Stakes, earning a career-best 82 Brisnet rating. By leading First Crop sire Vekoma, she is out of a winning Cairo Prince mare who is a half to Grade 2-winning sprinter Fioretti.

However, Fortuna Mia needs to make considerable improvement to be competitive in this race. Her past performances suggest that she may need more time to develop and find her footing against these more experienced rivals.

Carmen’s Candy Jar (12-1)

Carmen’s Candy Jar has been a bridesmaid in recent races against restricted stakes company. She had similar rail trips in the Joseph A. Gimma and Tempted Stakes but tired in the stretch while the top pair widened their leads. By the fourth-leading second-crop sire Vino Rosso, she is out of the unraced Uncle Mo mare No Mo Shopping.

Perhaps blinkers will help Carmen’s Candy Jar focus and give her the extra boost she needs. While she may not like being on the rail, her pedigree gives her some potential, and she could surprise with a good showing in the exotics.

Michelle (20-1)

Michelle made a strong debut at Laurel, winning by four lengths. She showed good early speed but tired in the stretch. Street Sense's daughter is out of the unraced Ghostzapperm mare, Clear the Clouds, and her second dam is a full sister to Tiznow.

Michelle is bred to love classic distances and is expected to improve with maturity. While she is taking on classier rivals, her potential for an exotics placing makes her a filly to keep an eye on.

Bless the Broken (12-1)

After a setback in her second start, Bless the Broken redeemed herself in her next race, showing good fighting spirit down the stretch. Laoban's daughter is out of Tapit's daughter, The Nightengale, and her half-sister is Kentucky Oaks heroine Princess of Sylmar.

Bless the Broken can continue to improve in her third start off the layoff and should handle the extra distance. With the blinkers off and William Walden in the trainer's seat, she has the potential to make a move and be a factor in the exotics.

Five a Side (20-1)

Five a Side has had some ups and downs in her racing career. She finally broke through in her third start, beating a mediocre herd of sprinters. By first-crop sire Spun to Run, she is out of Kylbrylie, a stakes-placed sprinter.

Five a Side should continue to improve with maturity, and her speed ratings are in the 80’s, but she needs to prove that she can compete with this group of fillies.

Beauty Reigns (9-2)

Beauty Reigns showed promise in her debut, pressing the pace and then taking over to win by a half-length. Into Mischief's daughter is out of the unraced Tapit mare Ilsa, and her extended family includes some notable runners.

Beauty Reigns has the pedigree to handle 1 1/8 miles, but she is facing more experienced runners, and her Brisnet rating is relatively low. She will need to step up her game to be a contender.

Tip Line (30-1)

Tip Line also had a disappointing performance in the Tempted Stakes after her maiden victory. This daughter of Nyquist is out of the unraced Tapit mare Tap to My Lu, and her second dam is Grade 1 winning sprinter Sweet Lulu.

Tip Line didn't have an excuse in the Tempted and will need to make significant improvements to be competitive in this race.

Ballerina d’Oro (8-1)

Ballerina d’Oro is looking to improve her form by switching to dirt and adding distance. She won her second start at Kentucky Downs and showed promise in the Jessamine (G2), despite having some issues with a tardy start and a bump with a rival.

Medaglia d’Oro's daughter is out of the unplaced Tapit mare In the Moonlight, and her family includes some notable runners. Ballerina d’Oro handled the dirt well in her early works this summer, and with Dylan Davis in the saddle, she has the potential to move up in the rankings.
