His journey began as a standout player at Withrow High School under the mentorship of George Jackson, where he contributed significantly to their Eastern Metro Conference and city triumphs in 1989.

His collegiate days were equally illustrious, playing three years at Xavier University under Pete Gillen. Graduating in 1994, Gentry was celebrated for his left-handed point guard skills, earning accolades as the top assist leader and outstanding defensive player. Post-college, he enjoyed a successful professional career across countries like China, Holland, Israel, Japan, and Poland.
