The New York Race Track Chaplaincy has chosen to celebrate the unwavering dedication of Hall of Fame jockey Johnny Velazquez and his wife Leona at its upcoming 18th Annual Fundraising Brunch. Scheduled for Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Saratoga National Golf Course in Saratoga Springs, this event will bestow upon them the newly renamed John Hendrickson and Marylou Whitney Award. This accolade acknowledges their profound and enduring commitment to enhancing the lives of those within the backstretch community.
The award's name change reflects a tribute to John Hendrickson, who, like his late wife Marylou Whitney, held a deep affection for the backstretch community. Ramón Dominguez, President of the Board of the NY Chaplaincy, emphasized that renaming the award was an appropriate way to honor John’s legacy of compassion and generosity. Johnny Velazquez, not only a celebrated athlete with over 6,600 victories and more than $492 million in earnings, but also an active board member of the Chaplaincy, has consistently shown leadership and support for various initiatives benefiting the racing world.
Johnny and Leona have set a remarkable example through their involvement in numerous charitable activities. Leona’s family has been instrumental in supporting backstretch organizations for generations, while Johnny has championed causes such as The Jockeys’ Guild and Belmont Child Care Association. Their efforts exemplify the spirit of giving back and highlight the importance of community service. By honoring these individuals, the Chaplaincy underscores the value of dedication and philanthropy, inspiring others to contribute positively to society.
