The Bill Denny/Rutgers Football Letterwinners Chapter of the National Football Foundation recently held its 54th annual scholar-athlete luncheon at Pines Manor in Edison. This prestigious event celebrated the achievements of 36 outstanding senior high school football players from Middlesex and Somerset counties. Each honoree received a scholarship check and a commemorative crystal plaque, recognizing their excellence on the field, in the classroom, and within their communities. The luncheon also honored various individuals for their contributions to football, including coaches, educators, and officials.

Since its establishment, the Bill Denny Chapter has awarded over $365,000 in scholarships to deserving student-athletes. This year's event highlighted not only the athletic prowess of these young men but also their commitment to academic success and community service. Among the notable recipients were Terrence Hanratty of Bernards, who was awarded the Frank Burns Scholarship Award for Somerset County, and Ja’Kir Thomas of Carteret, who received the William Denny Scholarship Award for Middlesex County.

The luncheon extended beyond honoring high school athletes. Rutgers University offensive lineman Reggie Sutton was recognized with the Rutgers Football Letterwinner’s Scholar-Athlete Award. Additionally, Woodbridge Athletics Director Joe Ward and former Bridgewater-Raritan Athletics Director Carl Weigner were honored as Educators of the Year for Middlesex and Somerset counties, respectively. Coaches Jordan Leitner of Metuchen and Matt Bloom of Somerville were acknowledged as Coach of the Year for their respective counties. Two Pop Warner players, Connor Sanginari and Daniel Warren, were also celebrated as scholar-athletes.

Further accolades went to veteran official Mark Moran, who received the Edward “Red” Losiewicz Distinguished Official Award, and former sportswriter Greg Tufaro, who was presented with the Distinguished American Award. The East Brunswick and Hillsborough football programs were recognized for their sportsmanship. Chapter President Fred Roselli emceed the event, ensuring it ran smoothly and respectfully.

The spirit of the National Football Foundation was evident throughout the day, celebrating leaders both on and off the field. These awards serve as a testament to the values of dedication, leadership, and integrity that these individuals have exemplified. As they move forward into the next chapters of their lives, they carry with them the pride and support of their communities and the foundation that has nurtured their growth.
