Gus Esquivel from Falfurrias, Joe Luis Lopez, and Steve Chapman from Calallen will be honored as the 2024 South Texas Baseball Coaches of the Year at the American Bank Center on Thursday. Calallen Wildcats: A Journey to State Finals

In the golden hues of autumn, the Calallen Wildcats embarked on an extraordinary journey under the guidance of head coaches Joe Luis Lopez and Steve Chapman. The team’s impressive record of 37-10 led them to their 13th appearance in the state tournament since 2011. Along the way, the Wildcats demonstrated resilience, overcoming only one loss in the postseason. They triumphed over formidable opponents like La Feria, Sinton, Floresville, Needville, and Boerne, ultimately securing a spot in Austin. After a dramatic victory in the regional final, they narrowly edged Springhill in a tense extra-inning state semifinal. Though Texarkana Liberty-Eylau claimed the championship, the Wildcats’ season was nothing short of inspiring.

Falfurrias Jerseys: Reviving Glory Days

The Falfurrias Jerseys also had a season to remember, returning to the regional final for the first time since 2007. Under the direction of Gus Esquivel, the team finished with an admirable 28-9-1 record. Despite finishing second in their district behind London, Falfurrias won their first eight postseason games, sweeping Taft, Edinburg IDEA College Prep, and Santa Gertrudis Academy. Their most thrilling moment came in a 13-inning battle against district rival London, where they secured a 4-3 victory in Game 1 of the regional final. Although the Pirates advanced to the state tournament, Falfurrias’ resurgence was a testament to their perseverance.
