In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Hope College baseball team secured a doubleheader sweep against The University of Olivet. Demonstrating resilience after a challenging losing streak, the Flying Dutchmen showcased their prowess on the field with powerful batting performances and career-best pitching efforts.
On a sunny Saturday at Boeve Baseball Stadium, the Hope College baseball team made headlines by scoring 11 runs in each game of their doubleheader against The University of Olivet. In an impressive performance, they won the first game 11-1 in just seven innings due to the 10-run rule and followed it up with an exhilarating 11-6 victory in the second game over nine innings.
The series win was particularly significant as it ended a seven-game losing streak for the Flying Dutchmen (8-20, 3-7 MIAA). Their offensive explosion included three home runs, one triple, and four doubles across both games, accumulating a total of 23 hits. Two standout pitchers delivered outstanding performances, setting new personal records.
Game 1 saw Hope taking an early lead with an 8-0 advantage through four-run rallies in the second and third innings. Senior Dylan Kleinedler initiated the momentum with a crucial three-run homer. Kleinedler's contribution did not stop there; he finished the game with four RBIs, including an RBI triple in the sixth inning. Junior centerfielder Jace DeMann also played a pivotal role, recording two hits and driving in a run. Ian Sanders, the winning pitcher, scattered three hits over 5.2 innings, striking out four batters.
In Game 2, the Flying Dutchmen started strong with a four-run first inning. Senior catcher Ben Stratman ignited the offense with a two-run single, followed by another two-run homer from DeMann. Despite Olivet’s efforts to tie the game at 4-4, DeMann continued his stellar performance with a go-ahead double in the third inning. Junior first baseman Cade Seabaugh added a solo homer in the eighth inning. Reliever Thomas Bacigalupo dominated the mound, pitching five scoreless innings while striking out a career-high eight batters.
Head coach Ryan Dorow expressed pride in his team's resurgence, emphasizing the importance of their renewed energy and fighting spirit. This victory came after a tough loss in Friday’s series opener at Olivet, where they fell short in a ninth-inning walk-off scenario.
Looking ahead, the Flying Dutchmen are set to play Kalamazoo College on Monday, April 14, at 2 p.m., marking a critical matchup following this weekend's triumph.
