Origins of the Partnership

The Wahlburgers franchise began its journey in 2011, founded by Paul Wahlberg alongside his brothers, Mark and Donnie. Initially, the restaurant concept garnered attention through a reality TV show on A&E Network, where the family showcased their culinary creations. By 2017, Hy-Vee had entered into a strategic partnership with Wahlburgers, planning to nearly double the brand's footprint by building and operating 26 new locations.Despite the ambitious plans, the collaboration did not fully materialize. Hy-Vee's efforts to convert its Market Grille restaurants into Wahlburgers outlets were met with mixed results. While some stores embraced the change, others struggled to maintain the momentum. Over time, Hy-Vee began to reassess the partnership, leading to the closure of several standalone Wahlburgers locations.

The Rise and Fall of Wahlburgers at Hy-Vee

At its peak, Hy-Vee was Wahlburgers' largest franchisee, operating the burger chain in 79 of its more than 240 retail locations. However, the relationship faced challenges, particularly during the pandemic. In January 2023, Hy-Vee closed its last standalone Wahlburgers in the Des Moines metro area, signaling a shift in strategy. The company decided to concentrate on integrating Wahlburgers into its store-based Market Grilles while maintaining the Mall of America location.The decline continued, and by early 2024, Hy-Vee operated Wahlburgers in just a fraction of its stores. The decision to phase out Wahlburgers entirely reflects a broader industry trend towards streamlined operations and a renewed emphasis on core competencies. Wahlburgers CEO Randy Sharpe acknowledged that the separation from Hy-Vee would leave the brand with approximately 40 locations nationwide, but he expressed optimism about the future, focusing on full-service restaurants.
