IBA Champions Integrity in Women's Boxing Amid Controversy
2025-02-10

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has taken a firm stance on preserving the integrity of women's sports, particularly in light of recent controversies. The organization has been proactive in addressing gender eligibility issues to ensure fair competition. In response to the challenges faced by female boxers, IBA conducted thorough evaluations and disqualified individuals who did not meet the criteria for participating in women’s events. Despite notifying the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about these disqualifications, the IOC proceeded to allow ineligible athletes to compete in the 2024 Olympics, leading to significant repercussions.

Consequently, the IBA is taking legal action against the IOC for facilitating the participation of ineligible athletes. Filing complaints with the Attorney General of Switzerland, as well as counterparts in France and the United States, underscores the seriousness of this matter. According to Swiss law, actions that compromise the safety and fairness of competitions may warrant criminal investigation. IBA President Umar Kremlev emphasized that safeguarding the rights of female athletes is paramount, advocating for strict measures at upcoming events like the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Niš. He also urged other federations to follow suit, ensuring gender equality in sports.

The IBA’s commitment to justice extends beyond policy changes. President Kremlev encouraged affected boxers to pursue legal action against IOC officials, offering comprehensive legal support free of charge. This move highlights the organization’s dedication to addressing violations of human rights and promoting a fair sporting environment. Moving forward, the IBA will implement stringent protocols to maintain the integrity of women’s boxing, emphasizing transparency and equity in all competitions.
