Investigation Unveils Financial Mismanagement in Dolton Village
2025-01-28

An extensive investigation has exposed serious financial irregularities and a lack of transparency under the leadership of Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard. Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, hired as an independent consultant, presented her findings to a packed audience at Lester Long Fieldhouse, revealing systematic efforts to conceal the village's true financial condition from trustees and the public.

The investigation uncovered a pattern of excessive spending and inadequate oversight within Henyard’s administration. Key issues included unauthorized credit card expenditures, misuse of federal relief funds, and opaque hiring practices. Since late 2021, there has been a deliberate shift away from sharing comprehensive financial reports with trustees and the community. By early 2022, this practice had effectively halted, leaving trustees in the dark about the village’s financial health. Additionally, the village received over $3 million in American Rescue Plan funds but failed to designate anyone to track or report on their usage, resulting in incomplete documentation and unspent funds.

The findings highlight the need for robust financial governance and accountability. The village must implement stringent measures to ensure transparent and responsible management of public resources. Establishing a municipal code and improving internal controls are crucial steps toward rebuilding trust and fostering a culture of integrity. The community's confidence in local government hinges on these reforms, which will pave the way for a more prosperous and accountable future for Dolton.
