Abby Olsen's unexpected foray into the world of standardbred racing began with a simple direct message. Living near Running Aces in Columbus, Minnesota, she discovered her love for the sport during visits with her parents. Motivated by this newfound interest, she reached out to local trainers via social media, leading to a job as a groom at Roland Racing Stable. Over five years, Olsen has embraced the demanding yet rewarding lifestyle of horse racing, forming deep bonds with horses like Giggle Monster. Her dedication earned her the 2024 MHRI Caretaker of the Year award, highlighting her significant contributions to Minnesota harness racing.
Abby Olsen's introduction to standardbred racing was serendipitous. Living just minutes away from Running Aces, she attended races with her family, captivated by the vibrant atmosphere and thrilling competitions. The excitement of live racing ignited a passion within her. During her freshman year of college, Olsen took the initiative to contact trainers Nick Roland and Jess Johnson through Facebook, offering her assistance over the summer. This decision marked the beginning of her journey into the racing world.
Initially, Olsen had no prior connection to the industry. However, her curiosity and enthusiasm led her to immerse herself in the unique culture of horse racing. She quickly realized that working in racing required a different mindset compared to traditional jobs. Long hours and late nights became part of her routine, especially on race nights when she stayed until the early morning. Despite the challenges, Olsen found joy in caring for the horses, which soon felt like family. Horses like Teachmehowtotory, MD Magic, and Giggle Monster became integral parts of her life, each with its own distinct personality. Giggle Monster, in particular, stood out as a "heart horse" due to his impressive career and endearing nature.
Olsen's commitment to standardbred racing has only deepened over the years. After graduating from UM Crookston in May 2024, she brought Giggle Monster to campus for a class on retraining racehorses, where he charmed everyone with his gentle demeanor. Her fondness for the horses inspired her to venture into horse ownership. Co-owning Jeremy’s Alibi with Jess and a partner allowed her to experience the thrill of having a stake in the sport. Although Jeremy’s Alibi didn't perform exceptionally well, the experience was invaluable.
As Olsen continues to grow in the industry, she envisions expanding her role. During her second year as a groom, she considered becoming a trainer, a dream that has since become more tangible. Olsen aims to establish a smaller stable, focusing on quality rather than quantity. Her aspiration is driven by a desire to see her horses succeed and to contribute positively to the sport. Winning prestigious events like the Little Brown Jug remains a distant but achievable goal. For now, Olsen cherishes the recognition she received as the 2024 MHRI Caretaker of the Year, an honor that underscores her dedication and hard work. As she prepares for the upcoming season at Running Aces and her temporary relocation to Cal-Expo, Olsen remains committed to nurturing her passion for standardbred racing, hoping to witness its continued growth in Minnesota.
